Invited by the FJKM, the biggest Protestant church in this country, David de Wet started training facilitators in the capital, Antananarivo, as well as in Mahajanga in the North-West. The believers from churches founded by missionaries from the French Reformed Church, the English Presbyterians and American Quakers decided to form one church and founded the FJKM. These letters stand for “Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar” in the local language.

The FJKM is the fastest growing denomination in Madagascar. They started in the year 2000 with about 2 600 local churches, and this number increased to 4 800 churches with more than 3.8 million members within four years. There are less than a thousand trained pastors to serve all these churches.

The growth in the church is mainly sustained by lay church leaders, who are responsible for most of the evangelisation done in Madagascar. It is therefore essential to have these leaders trained to interpret and use the Bible in their environment. In the North-West less than 5% of the population are evangelical Christians. Despite their small numbers and poverty, the local church is very much alive and determined to carry the light of the gospel to everyone in that area.
